Doctors Warn Not All Coconut Water Is Safe to Drink

Coconut water is often seen as a healthy and refreshing drink, but doctors warn that not every coconut water product is safe.

Fresh coconut water is usually safe for most people when it is handled and stored properly. However, problems can happen when coconuts are cracked, damaged, contaminated, or kept too long in warm conditions.

Experts say warning signs may include a sour smell, strange taste, discoloration, mold, leaking liquid, or cracks in the shell. Coconut water with these signs should not be consumed.

Spoiled coconut products may allow harmful microorganisms to grow. This can lead to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, weakness, or dizziness.

People with kidney problems should also be careful because coconut water contains potassium, which may be risky in large amounts.

The safest choice is to buy from trusted sellers, check packaging dates, refrigerate after opening, and avoid anything that looks or smells unusual.
