At least 58 sh.ot, 8 kil.led in Chicago over Labor Day weekend as city rejects Trump’s help

Over Labor Day weekend, at least 58 people were shot in Chicago, leaving eight dead, according to NBC Chicago. Police reported the shootings occurred in separate incidents, and in most cases, no suspects were taken into custody.

The fatalities included at least two women and three men, with authorities yet to release the names of the deceased or provide details on the remaining victims.

The violence comes as tensions rise between city leadership and the White House. President Donald Trump has suggested deploying the National Guard and federal agents to address Chicago’s persistent crime problem.

In response, Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order Saturday, barring local police from cooperating with federal forces. “This president is not going to deputize our police department,” Johnson said at a press conference alongside city leaders.

The order clarifies that Chicago police will enforce state and local laws but will not coordinate with federal agents or the National Guard on patrols, arrests, or immigration-related actions.

Johnson emphasized protecting constitutional rights and rejecting militarized tactics. “We don’t want tanks in our streets, families torn apart, or residents harassed by federal agents,” he said, vowing to safeguard Chicagoans from outside interference.

The White House quickly dismissed Johnson’s move, accusing Democrats of politicizing crime. “If these Democrats focused on fixing crime in their own cities instead of publicity stunts, their communities would be much safer,” spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told Reuters.
