BREAKING NEWS?

NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies has recently identified a massive asteroid, officially named 52768 (1998 OR2), which is expected to pass by Earth this June.

This asteroid is unusually large, with an estimated diameter between 1.5 and 4 kilometers, and is traveling at a speed of 8.7 kilometers per second.

It is projected to make its closest approach to Earth on June 2nd, but will still remain at a safe distance, well beyond that of the Moon.

Though its size is impressive and potentially destructive, experts say there is no significant risk of it impacting our planet.

For comparison, the Chelyabinsk asteroid that hit Russia in 2013 was only about 15 meters wide, yet still caused over 1,000 injuries and damaged many buildings.

Given its much larger size, if 52768 (1998 OR2) were to hit Earth, it could cause catastrophic damage—possibly even planetary destruction.

Thankfully, NASA’s data confirms that the chance of impact is extremely remote, and Earth is not in danger from this particular asteroid.
