Bruce Willis’s Wife Stood Firm On Her ‘Right’ Choice To Move Him Into A Separate Home Despite Being ‘Judged’
Emma Heming Willis has firmly stated that decisions about Bruce Willis’s care are not open to debate. As his primary caregiver, she has been open about their family’s experience, hoping to raise awareness and support others facing similar challenges.
Bruce’s health issues became public in March 2022, when he retired from acting after being diagnosed with aphasia. In February 2023, his condition progressed, and doctors confirmed he had frontotemporal dementia.
In an interview with Michael Strahan on Good Morning America in September 2025, Emma addressed criticism over the family’s decision for Bruce to live in a separate home. She explained this choice in her book, The Unexpected Journey, emphasizing it was made for his safety and well-being.
Speaking to PEOPLE, Emma admitted the move was extremely difficult but necessary. Bruce now lives in a nearby, specially adapted single-story home that provides constant care and a calm environment, while allowing their daughters to live more freely.
Emma expressed gratitude for the support and resources that made this arrangement possible, noting that the change has brought a sense of peace and balance to the family.
Although the decision sparked online debate, Emma said she expected criticism. She stressed it was the best option for Bruce and their children, adding that caregivers are often unfairly judged by those without lived experience.
A pivotal moment came when a neurologist warned that caregivers can neglect their own health. Emma realized asking for help was essential, not a failure, and hopes her story encourages others to care for themselves too.
