Charlie Kirk suspect sent disturbing messages to friends after assassination
Charlie Kirk, 31, was shot and killed on September 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University. He was struck in the neck by a rifle round fired from a nearby rooftop and was pronounced dead about 90 minutes later, sending shockwaves through the estimated 3,000-person audience.
A nationwide manhunt quickly followed. Authorities tracked the suspected shooter’s movements across rooftops and a nearby parking area, eventually recovering the rifle in a wooded location. Images of the suspect were circulated with a $100,000 reward for information.
The investigation took a pivotal turn when the suspect’s father recognized him from the images. Confronting his son, he persuaded him to surrender despite fears of the death penalty. The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox revealed that investigators had reviewed messages allegedly sent by Robinson on Discord, discussing retrieving a rifle from a “drop point,” adding a scope, and monitoring its location. Discord later clarified that some messages were from the roommate discussing Robinson’s notes.
Additional messages have since emerged showing Robinson joking with friends after the FBI released a suspect photo. Exchanges included references to a “doppelganger,” making light of reports about the rifle, and joking about unrelated topics.
Robinson is being held without bail on charges of aggravated murder, firearm discharge causing serious injury, and obstruction of justice. Evidence collected includes the rifle, shoe prints, a palm print, and forearm imprints. Governor Cox also noted that Robinson had been in a romantic relationship with a roommate who is transitioning.
Authorities emphasize that the investigation continues, examining digital communications, witness accounts, and evidence. Questions remain about motive, the rifle, and the context of Discord messages as officials work to clarify the full circumstances surrounding Kirk’s death.
