CHICAGO ROCKED BY HOLIDAY BLOODSHED
More than 54 people were shot in Chicago during the Labor Day weekend, according to police, with seven of those shootings resulting in deaths.
Authorities said most of the incidents appeared to be unrelated, and only a small number of arrests had been made in connection with the violence.
Among those killed were two women and three men, while the identities of two additional victims have not yet been confirmed.
The surge in violence unfolded amid rising political tension between city leadership and the federal government over public safety measures.
Mayor Brandon Johnson recently signed an executive order preventing Chicago police from cooperating with federal authorities on certain enforcement actions.
The move directly challenges President Trump’s call to deploy federal troops or agents to address crime in the city, a proposal Johnson said he would contest in court if enforced.
Meanwhile, the White House accused Democratic leaders of using crime as a political issue rather than taking effective steps to reduce violence, as Chicago has recorded 272 homicides so far this year.
