China hits out at US with scathing
China has criticized a recent trade deal between the US and the UK, brokered by Donald Trump. The agreement, announced on May 7, includes relief from US tariffs on UK car and steel exports. However, China expressed concern that the deal could harm its interests if Britain reduces reliance on Chinese products. Beijing emphasized that bilateral agreements should not negatively impact third parties and warned of potential retaliatory measures against nations that prioritize their own interests at China’s expense.
Chinese officials believe the deal deliberately isolates China, especially as the UK must align with US supply chain requirements. China’s commerce ministry stressed that pursuing selfish interests at the expense of others would ultimately fail. Meanwhile, the UK government stated that the agreement would help protect jobs and businesses, while maintaining that trade and investment with China remain significant.
