Close friend of JD Vance who is a Canadian
Canadian Conservative MP Jamil Jivani, a longtime friend of U.S. Vice President JD Vance, has withdrawn a previous invitation for Vance to visit Canada amid rising anti-American sentiment. Jivani, who attended Yale with Vance, said the current political climate—fueled by Donald Trump’s controversial remarks about Canada and ongoing trade tensions—has made such a visit unwise. Trump’s suggestion that Canada could become the 51st U.S. state and the imposition of steep tariffs have sparked frustration among Canadians, leading to public backlash, including boos during the U.S. national anthem at sporting events.
Jivani shared that his political rivals used his friendship with Vance against him during the April election, including manipulated campaign materials suggesting he supported U.S. policies. He called the experience “frustrating” and felt it misrepresented his values and dedication to Canada. Jivani acknowledged he hasn’t spoken to Vance recently and expressed his own disappointment with how U.S. politicians have been speaking about Canada. While distancing himself from Vance for now, he emphasized his priority remains serving his community and upholding Canadian interests.
