Donald Trump Issues a Message on Approaching Tsunami
Tsunami waves have begun hitting parts of Hawaii after a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Severo-Kurilsk in Russia. The quake triggered widespread warnings and advisories across the Pacific, affecting coastal areas in the U.S. and beyond.
Former President Donald Trump responded to the crisis by posting on Truth Social and X, warning residents of Hawaii, Alaska, and the U.S. Pacific Coast about the ongoing threat. He urged people to stay alert and follow updates from tsunami.gov.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Hawaii and parts of California are under Tsunami Warnings, while Alaska and other coastal regions have been issued advisories. A wave over five feet high was recorded in Kahului, Maui.
The Honolulu Department of Emergency Management confirmed waves had made landfall in Hawaii and issued an urgent warning for residents to evacuate threatened zones immediately. Traffic congestion in Honolulu followed as people tried to reach safer ground.
Oprah Winfrey assisted evacuation efforts by opening her private road in Maui. Her spokesperson confirmed that local law enforcement and FEMA were helping residents move safely, with cars allowed through in groups.
Emergency shelters have opened across Hawaii, and Governor Josh Green warned that waves could impact all sides of the islands. Meanwhile, other Pacific nations including Japan, the Philippines, and Mexico issued their own alerts.
In Japan, nearly 2 million people were evacuated, especially in Hokkaido. Although no major damage has been reported there, many other coastal regions across the Pacific remain on high alert as the situation continues to unfold.
