Donald Trump orders 100% tariffs

President Donald Trump has announced a 100 percent tariff on foreign films, claiming that the U.S. movie industry is in rapid decline due to foreign incentives luring filmmakers overseas. Labeling this shift a coordinated “attack” and a national security threat, Trump shared on Truth Social that the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative will begin enforcing the tariffs. He argues this will protect domestic film production and combat alleged propaganda in international films, stating, “We want movies made in America, again!”

Although Trump’s order targets foreign-made films, it’s unclear whether it also applies to American companies producing movies abroad or to streaming platforms like Netflix, which operate globally. This move follows a broader tariff war with China, which has responded by raising tariffs on U.S. imports and reducing the number of American films allowed in Chinese cinemas. Trump’s administration previously appointed actors like Jon Voight and Mel Gibson as envoys to revive U.S. film production. Critics argue the policy may further isolate American cinema from international markets and limit film diversity for U.S. audiences.
