Ellen DeGeneres Officially Leaves the U.S. Following the Election

Ellen DeGeneres revealed that she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, have decided to make the UK their permanent home. She shared the news during a public event in Cheltenham.

The couple had originally planned to divide their time between the US and the UK. However, after Donald Trump’s reelection, they chose to stay in Britain full-time. Ellen recalled arriving the day before the election and waking up to messages filled with crying emojis. Realizing Trump had won, she told Portia, “We’re staying here.”

Ellen also mentioned they are considering renewing their vows in the UK. The idea comes in response to concerns about U.S. lawmakers seeking to challenge or roll back marriage equality.

She praised her new surroundings, calling the countryside “absolutely beautiful” and admiring the villages, architecture, and simpler lifestyle. Ellen added that she appreciates the cleanliness, kindness of people, and even the way animals are treated, saying, “Everything here is just better.”

The couple moved in November, which Ellen admitted wasn’t the best timing, though it was still special. She said she saw snow for the first time, while Portia transported her horses, and Ellen herself keeps chickens. They even briefly had sheep on their property.

Ellen also spoke about her fears over developments in the US. She expressed concern about efforts by the Baptist Church to overturn same-sex marriage and noted she and Portia are ready to remarry in the UK if needed.

While saddened by ongoing struggles for acceptance in America, Ellen emphasized how happy she feels living quietly in the countryside with Portia, often sharing moments from their new life online.
