Everything Pope Leo XIV will receive
Pope Leo XIV, formerly known as Robert Prevost, will be inaugurated this Sunday at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, with tens of thousands expected to attend. As the first American pope, his formal installation will take place during a public mass on May 18 at 10 am local time. Following tradition, he will likely arrive in the iconic popemobile and wear white. After greeting the crowd, he will enter the basilica accompanied by fellow cardinals, where the presentation of ceremonial gifts will begin. Among these gifts are the golden Fisherman’s Ring, symbolizing papal authority, and the pallium, a lambswool vestment that signifies his role as shepherd of the Church.
Dignitaries from around the world will attend the ceremony, including Vice-President JD Vance representing the United States, and Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, representing the United Kingdom. While it is unclear if UK Labour leader Keir Starmer will attend, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed his presence. The event follows a swift conclave held earlier this month after the passing of Pope Francis on Easter Monday, marking a significant moment in the Catholic Church as it welcomes its new leader.
