Everything we know after Charlie Kirk is assassinated at Utah debate event

Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist, was shot and killed at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, September 10, during a debate event.

Former President Donald Trump confirmed Kirk’s death on Truth Social, calling him “great and legendary” and expressing condolences to Kirk’s wife, Erika, and family. Trump also ordered flags across the United States to be flown at half-mast until Sunday evening.

Kirk, a trusted ally of Trump, co-founded Turning Point USA at the age of 18, a political organization promoting conservative values in schools and universities. Despite facing criticism as a divisive figure, he gained global recognition for championing free speech.

The debate, hosted outdoors under a white gazebo, drew roughly 3,000 attendees. Kirk was just 20 minutes into his presentation when gunfire erupted. Moments earlier, a participant had approached the microphone to challenge him on topics related to mass shootings.

Videos and eyewitness accounts show Kirk recoiling in his chair as chaos unfolded, prompting the crowd to run for cover. He was quickly rushed to a hospital but later died from his injuries.

Police have questioned two individuals in connection with the shooting but released them after finding no current ties. The investigation remains active, and authorities continue searching for the suspect.

The shooter is believed to have fired from the roof of UVU’s Losee Center, overlooking the courtyard where Kirk was speaking. A manhunt is ongoing as officials work to identify and apprehend the perpetrator.
