Everything we know so far about National Guard shooting as suspect named

Two members of the National Guard were critically injured after being shot just a few blocks from the White House in Washington, D.C.

Authorities confirmed that one suspect was detained following the incident, and the surrounding area was quickly secured.

The White House entered a temporary lockdown after the shooting, which happened on November 26. Neither President Donald Trump nor Vice President JD Vance were at the residence when the attack occurred.

Trump later wrote on Truth Social that the two guards were “critically wounded,” calling the shooter an “animal” and insisting the attacker would “pay a very steep price.”

Officials have not released the names of the injured service members, but the FBI confirmed both remain in critical condition. Early reports claiming they had died were retracted by West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey after he acknowledged receiving conflicting information.

The shooting happened around 2:20 p.m. near the Farragut West Metro station, close to the intersection of 17th and I Street NW—approximately two to three blocks from the White House.

The suspect was identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who entered the U.S. in 2021. Witnesses say he used a handgun, shooting one guard in the chest and head, then wounding another before being stopped by a third guard. Lakanwal, shot several times, was hospitalized. Investigators are still determining a motive, including whether terrorism played a role.
