Fire at Louisiana auto plant is 90% contained while evacuation order remains
A massive industrial fire in Melbourne’s western suburb of Derrimut sent thick black smoke across the skyline this week, prompting one of Victoria’s largest emergency responses in recent years. Authorities warned the clean-up may take weeks.
The blaze broke out late Wednesday morning at a Swann Drive factory, where chemical storage drums fueled rapid explosions. Within minutes, plumes of smoke were visible for kilometres, alarming residents across the city.
Deputy Commissioner Michelle Cowling described the fire as “aggressive,” requiring extreme caution due to hazardous materials. More than 180 firefighters, supported by dozens of trucks and aerial units, worked in dangerous conditions.
By mid-afternoon, the fire was declared under control, though hotspots continued to burn. Fire crews remain on-site to prevent reignition and ensure public safety.
Nearby factories and offices were evacuated, with major roads — including parts of the Western Freeway — temporarily closed. Power outages caused traffic disruptions, though no injuries were reported among workers, residents, or emergency crews.
The Environment Protection Authority issued smoke warnings, urging residents to stay indoors and monitor air quality. Authorities also deployed barriers and pumps to limit contaminated runoff from entering local creeks.
While the fire’s cause remains under investigation, experts noted it highlights ongoing concerns about industrial safety in Melbourne’s west. Recovery efforts, including environmental monitoring and workplace inspections, are expected to continue for months, as communities call for stricter safety measures to prevent future incidents.
