Five jobs that could potentially stop you from being drafted if WW3 broke out amid fears
Concerns about a possible World War III have sparked discussions in the US about whether the military draft, unused since 1973, might return. Many Americans are wondering who could be exempt if conscription were reinstated.
Despite global tensions, including conflicts involving Russia, Ukraine, Israel, and Iran, US leaders have sent mixed messages. Vladimir Putin has warned about the world edging toward war, while Donald Trump recently dismissed the idea of bringing back the draft, calling it “ridiculous.”
Even so, public anxiety remains high. A YouGov survey reports that 45% of Americans believe World War III could occur within the next decade.
Currently, the United States relies entirely on voluntary enlistment. According to Military.com, as of mid-2025 there are no active government plans or proposals to revive the draft. The Department of Defense still supports an all-volunteer military structure.
However, experts note that certain extreme situations—such as a global war, a severe national crisis, or an unexpected drop in volunteer numbers—could force Congress and the president to reintroduce conscription.
If a draft returned, some professions might be considered too essential to send to the battlefield. Potential exemptions include ministers, some elected officials, veterans, and workers in healthcare, education, infrastructure, and engineering. Still, the Selective Service System does not guarantee automatic exemptions for any job.
Other individuals, such as Conscientious Objectors, may avoid combat due to deeply held moral or religious beliefs. They would be required to perform alternative civilian service—often in care, education, healthcare, or conservation—for a period equal to military service.
