Frank Caprio, known worldwide as a viral judge, passes at 88 due to pancreatic ca.n*er

Judge Frank Caprio, best known for his compassion on Caught in Providence, has passed away at the age of 88 after battling pancreatic cancer. His family announced his death on August 20, 2025, through his official Instagram page.

Before his passing, Caprio shared a final message from his hospital bed, smiling and giving a thumbs-up—an uplifting farewell to the many fans who admired him.

Often called “The Nicest Judge in the World,” Caprio touched millions with his mix of fairness, humor, and humanity. Instead of harsh punishments, he encouraged people and gave them second chances, earning global recognition.

His family remembered him as more than a judge: a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Rhode Island leaders also praised his spirit, noting how he inspired kindness well beyond the courtroom.

Caprio revealed his diagnosis in December 2023, the same day as his birthday. Despite enduring difficult treatments, including chemotherapy and radiation, he remained hopeful and encouraged others to face challenges with courage.

Born in Providence in 1936 to Italian immigrant parents, Caprio worked his way from shining shoes to becoming chief judge of the Providence Municipal Court. His courtroom later became the setting for Caught in Providence, which went viral worldwide.

Beyond the bench, he established the Filomena Fund to help residents with fines and supported numerous charities. A lifelong Red Sox fan and devoted family man, Caprio leaves behind a legacy defined by compassion, humility, and kindness.
