General Kurilla Retires
After more than 30 years of service, General Michael “Erik” Kurilla, known by the nickname “The Gorilla,” has stepped down as head of U.S. Central Command.
Military Career
Kurilla played a central role in directing President Trump’s June strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities and commanded over 15 major joint missions. His operations included efforts against Houthi forces in Yemen and Iran.
Recognition for Service
Throughout his career, he was celebrated for sharp decision-making and long-term vision in a volatile region. His honors include two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star.
Passing Command
Leadership of CENTCOM now transfers to U.S. Navy Admiral Charles Bradford Cooper Jr., who takes responsibility for American military operations in 21 countries spanning the Middle East and Central Asia.
Pentagon Turmoil
Kurilla’s departure follows a period of tension within the Pentagon, including the recent dismissal of Defense Intelligence Agency chief Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Kruse. Kruse was removed after controversy surrounding his early evaluation of the Iran strikes.
