House Passes Bill To Deport Migrants Who Assault Police Officers

The GOP-controlled House has passed legislation requiring the federal government to deport any illegal immigrant who assaults a police officer, despite opposition from most Democrats. The measure, called the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act, was introduced by Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., and passed 265 to 148, with 54 Democrats joining Republicans in support.

Van Drew argued that illegal immigrants who attack law enforcement show no respect for U.S. law and should not remain in the country, emphasizing that they cannot contribute positively to society. The bill directs federal authorities to detain such individuals until deportation and creates a new inadmissibility category for illegal immigrants accused of assaulting police.

Following the vote, House Majority Whip Rep. Tom Emmer criticized Democrats for prioritizing violent illegal immigrants over law enforcement, calling the party “the most anti-law enforcement in history.”

Meanwhile, a new CNN poll highlights Republican advantages in economic issues, surprising analysts. CNN’s Harry Enten noted that despite Democrats’ efforts to criticize Trump’s tariffs, Republicans maintain a strong lead on economic confidence.

Enten explained that in November 2023, Republicans held an 11-point advantage on economic issues, and by May 2025, this margin remained strong at eight points. Other polls, such as Reuters/IPSOS, show an even wider 12-point Republican advantage on which party offers a better economic plan.

He emphasized that this economic edge helps explain why Republicans remain competitive, even if Trump’s approval ratings are lower than before.

Enten also pointed out that Republicans have solidified support among middle-class voters, reinforcing their position on the economy as a critical factor in upcoming elections.
