On June 24, 2025, Zohran stunned many by leading the Democratic mayoral primary. The surprise extended to his parents—renowned filmmaker Mira Nair and Columbia professor Mahmood Mamdani—who watched their son’s unexpected rise to prominence.

Mira’s own life was rooted in art and academia. Born in India, she studied at Delhi University and Harvard before creating acclaimed documentaries and films like Salaam Bombay! and Mississippi Masala. Despite her busy career, she dedicated herself to Zohran’s campaign, even cooking meals for volunteers.

Zohran grew up in a household that valued creativity and justice. His parents met in Uganda while Mira filmed Mississippi Masala and Mahmood taught at Makerere University. Their world of art and scholarship shaped Zohran’s sense of empathy and activism.
