JD Vance has sharp 5-word response to governor who criticized him for family trip to Disneyland
Vice President JD Vance has responded after California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized him for visiting Disneyland with his family amid heightened immigration enforcement in the state.
Photos and videos of Vance, his wife Usha, and their two children enjoying Disneyland on Saturday went viral. Their trip coincided with federal immigration raids happening across Los Angeles, prompting backlash from both officials and protesters.
Newsom took to Twitter with a sarcastic remark: “Hope you enjoy your family time, @JDVance. The families you’re tearing apart certainly won’t.” His comment referenced lawsuits facing the state and a controversial raid on a marijuana farm involving undocumented workers.
Vance replied simply: “Had a great time, thanks.” Around 150 protesters gathered at Disneyland to criticize his presence, with other demonstrations taking place nearby in Anaheim. One protest sign read, “No family vacation while we deal with family separation.”
Some demonstrators even showed up at the Grand Californian Hotel, where the Vance family was rumored to be staying. Tensions were already high between Newsom and the Trump administration, particularly since Trump’s second term began in January.
The friction escalated in June when Trump deployed the National Guard to suppress anti-ICE protests in California, despite Newsom’s opposition. Recent raids in Orange County, which includes Anaheim and other nearby cities, have been labeled by critics as racially targeted.
A judge later blocked Trump’s attempt to arrest protesters, calling it unconstitutional. County Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento expressed concern about Vance’s visit, urging leaders to better understand immigrant communities rather than enact harmful policies.
