JD Vance Sparks a Stir
A photo of U.S. Vice President JD Vance and his son inside the Sistine Chapel has sparked controversy online for potentially violating Vatican rules. The image, posted by commentator Charlie Kirk, shows the pair admiring Michelangelo’s ceiling frescoes during their Easter weekend visit. While many saw it as a touching moment, others criticized it, pointing out that photography is strictly forbidden inside the chapel according to Vatican guidelines. The backlash comes despite the possibility that exceptions may be granted to dignitaries, as seen when Michelle Obama was photographed there in 2009.
Vance’s Vatican visit also included a meeting with Pope Francis, who passed away the following day at age 88. During their exchange, the Pope, visibly ill, offered gifts to Vance’s children. Vance later expressed condolences and reflected on the Pope’s influence. Pope Francis’ death, caused by a cerebral stroke, was met with mourning across St. Peter’s Square. His final public appearance occurred on Easter Sunday, just before his passing. The Vatican has since begun preparations for his funeral and public viewing, as tributes pour in for a pontiff who led the Church through a transformative decade.
