‘Life-saving’ iPhone trick now available
The latest iOS 18.5 update for iPhones introduces a significant feature, especially beneficial for users of older devices like the iPhone 13. Previously available only on iPhone 14 and newer models, satellite texting is now accessible on the iPhone 13, allowing users to send messages even when they lack a network signal. This feature connects to satellites instead of local phone masts, making it potentially life-saving in situations where traditional coverage is unavailable. However, the feature’s availability depends on the network carrier, with only T-Mobile currently offering support in the U.S., and it does not include emergency service messaging as seen on newer models.
To enable satellite texting on an iPhone 13, users must update to iOS 18.5 via Settings > General > Software Update. After updating, ensure iMessage is activated, and the device has a compatible SIM card. When outside with no signal and a clear view of the sky, the option to “Use Messages via Satellite” will appear. Users can also test the feature using the “Satellite Connection Demo” found in the Settings menu. While not universally available, this update marks a valuable extension of the feature to older iPhone models.
