Major US Volcano About

Scientists in the US have warned that the Axial Seamount, an underwater volcano located about 300 miles off the coast of Oregon, may erupt soon. Situated 5,000 feet below the Pacific Ocean, the volcano has recently triggered numerous earthquakes, leading researchers to predict a potential eruption later this year or by early 2026. However, the timeline remains uncertain, as eruptions can be unpredictable. William Wilcock, a marine geophysicist from the University of Washington, noted that while the current rate is around a few hundred quakes per day, it is still less than the activity observed before the last eruption in 2015.

Experts believe the eruption is unlikely to pose a threat to humans, with some marine life potentially benefiting from the increased heat. The last eruption, in 2015, caused around 8,000 earthquakes and lowered the ocean floor by eight feet, necessitating the use of robotic explorers. Mike Poland from the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory described the Axial Seamount as the most closely monitored submarine volcano globally. He explained that its eruptions resemble Hawaiian lava flow events, with calm lava effusions rather than explosive activity.
