Man hit with huge ‘nonsense’

In 2015, Daniel Gehlke from Seattle tried to help fellow drivers by warning them about a speed trap ahead. He made a homemade sign that read, “Cops ahead! Stop at sign and light!” However, a police officer approached him, saying the sign was illegal because it gave instructions to drivers, which is against Washington State law. Despite scribbling out the “stop” part, Daniel was cited for using a “Forbidden Device” and fined $138 for displaying a sign that could be mistaken for an official traffic warning.

Daniel challenged the fine in court, arguing that his sign was protected by the Constitution and that he wasn’t impersonating an official traffic sign. The police defended the fine, stating the issue was with the sign’s wording, not his intentions. Ultimately, the court agreed with Daniel, and the case was dismissed, meaning he did not have to pay the fine.
