Man Suffers Terrifying Side Effects After

In 2019, a bizarre medical case in Ireland involved a 33-year-old man who injected himself with his own semen in an attempt to treat chronic back pain. This self-devised treatment, carried out without any medical advice, led to severe complications.

The man arrived at a hospital in Dublin complaining of sudden lower back pain after lifting a heavy object. However, doctors were alarmed by the unusual redness and swelling in his right arm during the examination.

When questioned, the man revealed that he had been injecting himself with semen for 18 months, using one dose per month. Just before his hospital visit, he had administered three doses in one session using a hypodermic needle he bought online.

An X-ray showed he had developed subcutaneous emphysema—a rare condition where air is trapped under the skin—as well as a build-up of semen in the soft tissue of his arm. Immediate antibacterial treatment was required.

The Cleveland Clinic defines subcutaneous emphysema as air trapped under the skin, which in this case resulted from the man’s dangerous practice. Despite the need for further treatment, the man discharged himself before his arm could be drained.

Dr. Lisa Dunne, who authored the medical report in the Irish Medical Journal (IMJ), stated this was the first known case of a human injecting semen intravenously. While similar tests had occurred in animals, no human precedent existed.

The IMJ warned against self-administered, unproven treatments and emphasized the dangers of using non-medical substances intravenously, especially by individuals without proper training.
