Mexico Files Lawsuit Against

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on May 9 that Mexico has filed a lawsuit against Google over the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” on Maps. The name change followed an executive order issued earlier this year by Donald Trump. Sheinbaum stated that the lawsuit aims to ensure that the US government’s decree is respected, clarifying that the order only applies to the portion of the US continental shelf, not the entire gulf. Despite Sheinbaum’s objections, Google Vice President Cris Turner previously stated that the company would not reverse the map changes.

On Thursday, the US House of Representatives passed a bill to formalize the name change, requiring federal agencies to update their maps accordingly. However, the bill still faces challenges as it is unlikely to pass the 60-vote threshold in the Senate, leaving the final outcome uncertain.
