Mikie Sherrill’s Officially In Trouble Following New Poll, New Endorsement For GOP’s Ciattarelli
Polling and Race Outlook
Recent surveys show the New Jersey governor’s race tightening. An Emerson College poll (Sept. 25, 2025) found Democrat Mikie Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciattarelli tied at 43%, with 11% undecided. A week earlier, Quinnipiac University had Sherrill ahead 49%–41%, signaling volatile voter support.
Naval Academy Controversy
Sherrill’s past at the U.S. Naval Academy has resurfaced. In 1994, she was barred from attending graduation following a cheating scandal involving over 130 midshipmen. Sherrill has said her punishment came from refusing to report fellow classmates, but critics argue the incident raises questions about her judgment.
Military Records Leak
In late September, Sherrill’s unredacted military records — including private details — were mistakenly released to Nicholas De Gregorio, a Marine veteran aligned with Ciattarelli. Sherrill accused the Trump administration and Ciattarelli’s campaign of weaponizing the leak. The National Archives admitted fault and launched an investigation.
Nepotism Claims
Accusations of favoritism also dog Sherrill after two of her children were admitted to the Naval Academy. Her office has denied involvement, insisting she did not nominate them and that admissions were made independently. Still, the issue has fueled political criticism.
Shifts in Support
Democratic leaders worry about slipping support among key groups. Some labor unions, including the Fraternal Order of Police, have endorsed Ciattarelli. Sherrill has worked to solidify Black voter backing, naming Rev. Dale Caldwell as her running mate.
Endorsements and Backing
Sherrill maintains endorsements from the Teamsters Joint Council 53 and New Jersey Citizen Action PAC. However, Ciattarelli gained momentum when the New York Post endorsed him, blasting Sherrill’s agenda as ineffective.
Race at a Crossroads
With both candidates battling controversies and courting critical endorsements, the race remains unpredictable. The closing weeks will likely determine which party steers New Jersey’s political future.
