Minnesota Rep. hortman and husband

On June 14, 2025, Minnesota Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed inside their Brooklyn Park residence in what authorities described as a politically driven attack. Nearby, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot but survived their injuries.

Police identified the suspect as 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter, who allegedly posed as a law enforcement officer by wearing a latex disguise. Investigators say he carried a manifesto naming several Democratic officials as intended targets.

Following a manhunt, Boelter was captured and later faced federal charges that include murder, stalking, firearms violations, and the attempted killing of the Hoffmans. Prosecutors are considering whether to pursue the death penalty through federal jurisdiction, despite Minnesota having abolished capital punishment.

Later in June, Melissa and Mark Hortman, along with their golden retriever Gilbert, lay in state at the Minnesota Capitol—an unprecedented honor extended to a woman, a private citizen, and a pet. Their funeral the following day was attended by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, who joined mourners in prayer.

Investigators also reported finding survival supplies, protest materials, a handwritten message to the FBI director, and a list of roughly 70 names inside the suspect’s vehicle, suggesting broader intent.

Separate reporting has questioned aspects of the police response, including entry delays and confusion at the scene, though local authorities maintain procedures were properly followed.

A special election is planned for September 16, 2025, to fill Hortman’s legislative seat, while concerns over the safety of public officials continue to draw national attention.
