People outraged after

A job advert for a housekeeping assistant at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, posted on the Royal Household’s website, has sparked backlash online due to its pay rate. The listing described the role as involving the cleaning and upkeep of historic interiors, with opportunities for skill development and training. It also mentioned generous benefits like 25 to 30 days of annual leave, a non-contributory pension plan, complimentary on-site lunch, and support for personal wellbeing and life priorities, including parental leave and volunteering days.

However, social media users were outraged to discover the offered wage of £12.60 per hour, criticizing it as being well below average for similar roles. One Twitter user noted it was £5.40 less than the industry average, while others called it “disgusting” and “tragic.” Some compared it unfavorably to earnings from cleaning Airbnb rentals. This controversy comes as the UK’s National Living Wage for those aged 21 and over was recently increased to £12.21 per hour as of April 1.
