People shocked by Trump’s ‘poor excuse’ as to why US needs to take over Greenland
Donald Trump’s renewed comments about wanting Greenland to become part of the United States have sparked widespread criticism across social media platforms.
Although the topic has been quieter recently, Trump has repeatedly argued in the past that the US should take control of Greenland, despite firm statements from both Danish and Greenlandic officials that the territory is not for sale.
In a recent interview, Trump was asked whether he still supported the idea after appointing Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as Special Envoy to Greenland. He claimed Landry had approached him about the position.
Trump described Landry as a skilled negotiator and said Greenland was essential for US national security. He also suggested Denmark had neglected the region and offered little military protection.
He went on to make disputed historical claims, implying the US had a presence in Greenland centuries ago. Trump emphasized that his interest was not driven by resources, insisting America already has abundant oil and minerals.
The interview clip circulated widely online and was accompanied by a community note disputing Trump’s historical assertions, pointing out that the US did not exist 300 years ago and that American involvement in Greenland began much later.
Many users also challenged Trump’s security argument, noting the US already operates the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland. Critics compared his reasoning to justifications used in other geopolitical conflicts, with some dismissing his comments as uninformed.
