Politician Blames Guns After Shocking Campus Assassination
Following a shooting at a Utah campus event, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called for immediate gun-control measures, criticizing Congress for years of inaction. Speaking outside the Capitol, she stressed the need for more than rhetoric: “Every single day people are dying due to gun violence in America, and every single day, there are people in this building who continue to vote against doing anything.”
The shooting occurred just after noon during a scheduled speaking event at Utah Valley University, according to school officials.
Authorities reported that shots were fired from a building roughly 200 yards away, hitting the guest speaker. Security personnel quickly removed the victim, and the campus was placed on lockdown.
Police confirmed that multiple individuals were briefly detained but later released after being cleared of involvement. The shooter remains unidentified and at large.
Witness video shows the speaker engaging with the audience moments before the gunfire. A loud pop is heard, followed by visible chaos as security rushed to assist the victim.
Leaders across the political spectrum condemned the attack. Some called for prayers and support for the victim, while others emphasized the need to address increasing political violence and prevent future tragedies.
Utah authorities stated that campus police and federal investigators continue to work on the case. Security measures are being increased at similar events in the coming weeks to protect speakers and attendees.
