Pope Francis’ emotional
Pope Francis passed away on Monday, April 21, at the age of 88 due to a cerebral stroke that led to a coma and heart failure. His death prompted global tributes and marked the beginning of a nine-day mourning period before a new pope is selected. In his final hours, the Vatican revealed that Francis’ last words were a heartfelt “Thank you for bringing me back to the Square,” directed at his personal healthcare assistant, Massimiliano Strappetti. This was in gratitude for encouraging him to take one final ride in the popemobile after the Urbi et Orbi blessing on April 20.
Strappetti, who previously saved the Pope’s life by recommending colon surgery, had been by Francis’ side through his 38-day hospital stay and recovery. Appointed in 2022 as his personal healthcare assistant, Strappetti remained devoted throughout the Pope’s illness. Pope Francis was described as “tired but content” during his final appearance in St. Peter’s Square. His funeral will be held on Saturday, April 26, at 10 a.m. local time, led by the dean of the College of Cardinals. Until a new pope is elected through a papal conclave—expected to take 15 to 20 days—the Vatican remains in a transitional period known as sede vacante.
