Pope Francis issued

Pope Francis made an emotional final appearance on Easter Sunday (20 April), delivering a message of peace and unity just a day before his death at the age of 88. Speaking from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, he emphasized the importance of freedom of religion, thought, and expression. He called attention to the suffering in Gaza, particularly among Christians, and condemned the ongoing violence around the world. The Pope expressed deep sympathy for both Israeli and Palestinian people and urged for a ceasefire, release of hostages, and humanitarian aid. He also appealed for peace in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The Vatican announced Pope Francis’ passing early on 21 April, with Cardinal Kevin Farrell stating that he had returned “to the home of the Father.” The Pope had recently been hospitalized with a respiratory crisis, including double pneumonia and kidney issues, and had spent over a month in care. Tributes poured in from world leaders, including King Charles III. Following his death, the Church will observe nine days of mourning before the College of Cardinals begins the papal conclave to elect a new pope. Of the 252 cardinals, 138 are eligible to vote for his successor.
