Pope Leo just broke major security
World leaders and royals gathered at the Vatican today for Pope Leo’s inauguration, where the newly elected pontiff made a notable choice by arriving in an open-top popemobile. This decision mirrors that of his predecessor, Pope Francis, who also opted out of using bulletproof glass, despite security concerns. The open-top vehicle allowed Pope Leo to engage closely with the crowd in St. Peter’s Square, much like the traditional use of the popemobile, which originated in the 1930s and gained popularity in the 1970s. Historically, the popemobile’s protective features, including bulletproof glass, became essential after the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II in 1981.
Pope Leo, the first American pope, continued to break tradition by speaking English at his first mass, revealing his Chicago accent. This choice marked a departure from the customary use of Italian or Latin in such significant ceremonies. During the inauguration, he will receive the Fisherman’s Ring, symbolizing Saint Peter, and the pallium, representing his pastoral role. As he begins his papacy, Leo will also deliver a homily outlining his vision for his leadership.
