Restaurant releases CCTV
A restaurant in Widnes, Cheshire, claims a couple attempted to scam their way out of paying a £64.85 bill by planting glass in their food. San Marino Italian Bar & Restaurant says the diners, accompanied by a young girl, alleged they found glass in a pasta dish, with the woman claiming it nearly damaged her expensive veneers. After refusing to pay and demanding compensation, the group left. Suspicious staff reviewed CCTV footage, which appeared to show the man pulling something from his pocket and handing it to the woman, who placed it in her napkin before making the complaint.
The restaurant posted the video on social media to warn others of similar scams. Managing director Miraz Yolcu described the incident as shocking and damaging, emphasizing the stress it caused staff and potential harm to the restaurant’s reputation. He noted that the glass shown wasn’t used in their kitchen. The incident has been reported to Cheshire Police, who confirmed an investigation is underway. Yolcu urged businesses to remain calm in such situations and review security footage before taking further action. He also advised immediately involving the police if a false claim is suspected.
