Rock Legend’s son dies suddenly at 52

Jackson Browne is mourning the loss of his eldest son, Ethan Browne, whose death was announced on Nov. 26. The 77-year-old musician confirmed the news through a family statement shared on Facebook, revealing that Ethan, a 52-year-old actor and model, has passed away. A cause of death has not been provided.

The statement explained that Ethan was found unresponsive at his home on the morning of Nov. 25. The family requested privacy and noted that no additional information would be released at this time.

Ethan’s death is especially painful for Browne, echoing past tragedy. His mother, Phyllis Major, married the singer in 1975 but died by suicide the following year, leaving Ethan very young. Growing up, he faced both the shadow of that loss and the attention that came with his father’s fame.

As a baby, Ethan appeared with Browne on a 1974 Rolling Stone cover. He later pursued creative work of his own, landing a small role in Raising Helen in 2004 and establishing a modeling career with designers such as Isaac Mizrahi. Mark Ronson’s memoir Night People noted Ethan’s striking presence and thoughtful personality.

Music remained central in his life. He founded Spinside Records, connected to his father’s Inside Recordings label, shaping his own space within the family’s artistic roots. Browne also has a younger son, Ryan, now 43.

Jackson Browne, born in Germany and raised in Los Angeles, became a defining figure of 1970s California rock, with hits like “Running on Empty” and “Doctor My Eyes.” His achievements include Grammy nominations and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

As Browne continues his long career, he now faces the immense grief of losing his firstborn. The family is asking for privacy while fans and friends honor Ethan’s life and quiet creativity.
