Sad news for drivers over 70: soon they will no longer be able to..

A new law being considered could soon restrict drivers over 70 from driving at night. The proposal follows rising concerns about the safety of elderly drivers after dark due to age-related vision and health challenges.

Experts say aging impacts night vision, reaction time, and resistance to fatigue. Older adults may struggle with glare, judging distances, and spotting hazards, making nighttime driving riskier.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports a 14% increase in nighttime crashes involving seniors over the past five years, despite them driving fewer miles overall. These accidents often involve difficulties with visibility and reaction time.

If passed, the law would ban those over 70 from driving between 8 PM and 6 AM unless it’s an emergency or they have medical clearance. Seniors would also need annual vision and reaction tests to qualify for exemptions.

Additional rules would include special license markings for daytime-only drivers, mandatory health checks during license renewals, and educational programs about transportation alternatives.

Public reaction is mixed. Some families support the idea, believing it could protect their elderly loved ones. Others, especially seniors, see it as discriminatory, arguing that many older adults drive safely and should not be grouped unfairly.

Alternatives to the law include encouraging seniors to plan ahead for driving limitations, use ride-sharing services, or rely on family. Advocates also suggest enhancing vehicles with technology like night vision aids and automatic braking to help seniors stay safe behind the wheel.
