Strict Royal Family rule

King Charles III is not attending Pope Francis’ funeral today (26 April) due to royal protocol, which traditionally prevents the Sovereign from attending funerals. Instead, the UK is represented by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, his wife Victoria, and Prince William, who is attending on the King’s behalf. King Charles was the last head of state to meet Pope Francis before his death on 9 April. A similar precedent occurred in 2005 when Queen Elizabeth II did not attend Pope John Paul II’s funeral, sending then-Prince Charles instead. At that time, Charles even delayed his wedding to Queen Camilla to represent his mother at the Vatican.

In a statement, King Charles expressed deep sorrow over Pope Francis’ death, praising his compassion, commitment to unity, and dedication to caring for creation. He noted that the Pope’s devotion touched many lives across the world and highlighted the significance of their recent meeting earlier this month. The King and Queen extended their heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church and all those mourning the loss of Pope Francis, remembering him as a faithful servant and inspiring leader.
