Suspected Kirk Assassin On
Authorities confirmed Sunday that Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of assassinating Charlie Kirk, is under “special watch” while awaiting a mental health evaluation.
Robinson is being housed in a secure unit of the Utah County Sheriff’s Department, where deputies can closely monitor him until his mental state is properly assessed, officials said in a statement.
The evaluation process is expected to take several days. Once completed, Robinson will move through classification procedures to determine his permanent housing while in custody.
During his detention, Robinson will remain under the observation of medical, mental health, and correctional staff, the sheriff’s department emphasized.
Authorities explained that “special watch” can be ordered for various reasons, such as the seriousness of a crime, violent behavior, or suicidal comments made at the time of arrest. In Robinson’s case, officials noted specific concerns about suicidal remarks.
Robinson is accused of fatally shooting Charlie Kirk, 31, during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University in Orem. Kirk, a husband and father of two, was speaking to students when the attack occurred.
The suspect was captured after a 33-hour manhunt. Law enforcement sources revealed that Robinson’s father identified him from FBI-released surveillance photos and ultimately turned him in.
