Terrifying moment heroic civilian disarmed alleged shooter in Bondi Beach terror attack
A man has been widely praised as a hero after bravely confronting and disarming one of the suspected gunmen during the Bondi Beach terror attack in Australia.
Police were called to the scene at around 6:47 pm local time on Sunday, December 14, after reports of gunfire at the crowded beach, where more than 1,000 people had gathered to celebrate Hanukkah.
Authorities have since confirmed that 12 people were killed, including one alleged attacker. Another suspect remains in critical condition, while at least 29 others, among them a child and two police officers, were injured and taken to hospital.
The attack has been classified as terrorism and is now the deadliest mass shooting in Australia since the Port Arthur tragedy in 1996. Videos shared online show chaos as gunmen fired from a bridge and crowds ran for safety.
One widely shared clip shows a civilian taking extraordinary action. While hiding behind a parked car, the man moved toward a shooter from behind and tackled him to the ground in an attempt to disarm him.
After a tense struggle, the bystander managed to wrestle the gun away and pointed it at the suspect until he fled. Gunfire continued in the background as others sought cover.
The man was later identified as Ahmed Al Ahmed, a father of two. Despite having no weapons training, he suffered gunshot wounds and was hospitalized. Leaders, including Premier Chris Minns, praised his actions, crediting his courage with saving lives.
