The real reason Pope Francis
Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday at age 88, devoted his life to serving God and the Catholic Church. Known for his humility and deep faith, one of his most personal sacrifices was giving up television for nearly 35 years. He recalled the exact date—15 July 1990—when he decided to stop watching TV after witnessing inappropriate content while watching with fellow priests. Reflecting on the moment in his 2024 autobiography, he wrote, “A priest cannot look at such things.” Since then, he only allowed himself to watch TV on rare occasions, instead preferring to listen to opera for entertainment.
The Vatican announced his death on 21 April, stating he died peacefully in the morning after a long period of declining health. Despite mobility issues, Pope Francis addressed crowds from the balcony at St. Peter’s Square just a day earlier on Easter Sunday. Born in Buenos Aires in 1936, he was the first non-European Pope in over a millennium and became head of the Catholic Church in 2013. His papacy focused on issues such as poverty, inequality, and climate change. Following tradition, the College of Cardinals will wait 15 days before beginning the process to elect a new Pope.
