The Simple Sink Trick You Should Do Before Leaving for Vacation

Before a trip, most people remember the big tasks — setting the thermostat, cleaning out the fridge, watering plants, and securing windows and doors. Yet many forget one small detail that often leads to that musty smell when returning home: the sink.

Under every sink is a P-trap, the curved pipe that always holds a little water. This water acts as a seal that blocks sewer odors and insects from creeping back into your home. When you’re using the sink daily, the barrier stays intact without you noticing.

But when a house sits empty for several days or longer, the water in the P-trap can slowly evaporate. Once it dries out, nothing stops unpleasant smells — or bugs — from traveling up the drain.

A quick and cost-free fix helps prevent this. Simply lay a paper towel over the drain and place an upside-down glass over it. The towel works as a breathable cover that stops odor and pests from coming through while still allowing a little airflow so moisture doesn’t build up.

Unlike rubber stoppers, a glass won’t deform or pop out of place while you’re away, making it a reliable temporary barrier.

For even better results, clean the sink before leaving. Rinse well with hot water, pour a splash of white vinegar down the drain to cut buildup, and wipe the basin dry.

Then set the towel and glass in place. This tiny step takes only a moment but helps ensure your home smells clean and fresh when you walk back through the door.
