The true reason Donald and Melania Trump are renovating the White House
Donald and Melania Trump have returned to the White House for a second time following Donald Trump’s election win last November. As with any presidential couple, they have made updates to the furniture and decor at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
This time, however, their changes have extended beyond typical updates. Notably, the historic Rose Garden has been transformed into a tiled seating area, a move that has drawn criticism and curiosity.
The Rose Garden holds historical significance, originally commissioned by President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. It was designed as an “outdoor room” for meetings, receptions, and events, according to Stewart McLaurin, president of the White House Historical Association.
Donald Trump defended the renovation, explaining that wet grass and impractical footing prompted the change. He noted that the new tiles match the White House’s color and reflect heat, making the area more functional for outdoor use.
The motivation behind the broader White House remodel may now be clearer. According to a source speaking to People Magazine, the couple prefers Palm Beach and is essentially “bringing Mar-a-Lago to Washington” by recreating elements of their Florida home at the White House.
A Mar-a-Lago club member added that Donald and Melania are proud of their Palm Beach decor and want to replicate that atmosphere in Washington. The source emphasized that any changes are meant to make the White House feel more like Mar-a-Lago.
Ultimately, the remodel reflects the Trumps’ attachment to their Palm Beach home. Donald Trump personally designed much of Mar-a-Lago’s current decor, and the couple takes pride in bringing that aesthetic into their temporary Washington residence.
