Thrifted Washboard Farmhouse Makeover

Thrift shops are treasure troves of forgotten gems, waiting to be rediscovered and given new life. Recently, I stumbled upon a rustic, vintage washboard at a local thrift store. Its glass and wood frame, though a bit worn, held the perfect potential to become a stunning piece of farmhouse-inspired décor. With a bit of creativity, a few supplies, and some elbow grease, I turned this laundry room relic into a charming decorative piece that now graces my home with rustic elegance. Here’s how I did it!

1. Cleaning and Preparing the Washboard

The first step in any upcycling project is a good, thorough cleaning. When dealing with an item like a washboard, which was likely used heavily in its day, it’s essential to remove any dirt, grime, or buildup to reveal the piece’s true beauty.

  • Materials Needed:
    • Hot, soapy water (I used Dawn dish soap)
    • A kitchen sponge or soft-bristle brush
    • A shish kabob stick or an old toothbrush

I took the washboard to my kitchen sink, filling it with hot, soapy water. After scrubbing the surface thoroughly, I used a shish kabob stick to clean out years’ worth of dried clothing lint from the crevices. Once the wood was free of residue, I rinsed it well and left it to dry overnight.

2. Adding a Weathered Look

With the washboard clean, I wanted to give it a more cohesive, aged appearance. For this, I chose a wood accelerator product that would help create a weathered gray tint, perfect for the farmhouse look I had envisioned.

  • Materials Needed:
    • Rust-Oleum Varathane Weathered Wood Accelerator (Gray)
    • A soft paintbrush

I carefully brushed on the wood accelerator, watching as it quickly began to transform the washboard’s natural wood tone. The gray tint complemented the wood’s natural grain, giving it a rustic charm that was both subtle and beautiful. I let it dry completely before moving on to the next step.

3. Adding Farmhouse-Inspired Transfers

One of my favorite ways to personalize an upcycled piece is with decor transfers. For this washboard, I decided to use a transfer from the Redesign With Prima collection, which I knew would add a lovely touch of farmhouse style.

  • Materials Needed:
    • Redesign With Prima Everyday Farmhouse decor transfer (Rosewood Farm)
    • Application stick (included with the transfer)

I cut out a portion of the transfer that would fit perfectly on the washboard. After centering it on the board, I used the provided application stick to rub the design onto the surface, ensuring it adhered evenly. This simple addition added a touch of character, elevating the washboard from a practical item to a piece of art.

4. Conditioning and Protecting the Wood

Once the transfer was applied, I wanted to protect the wood and add a soft, subtle sheen to the surface. For this, I used a conditioning product designed specifically for wood pieces.

  • Materials Needed:
    • Dixie Belle’s Big Mama’s Butta

This blend of natural ingredients—hemp seed oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and carnauba wax—enhanced the wood grain and provided a lovely finish. I applied it sparingly, allowing the oils to soak in and give the washboard a long-lasting, water-resistant finish. Not only did this step protect the wood, but it also softened its texture, making it feel luxurious to the touch.

5. Attaching a Metal Container for Added Functionality

I wanted this decorative washboard to serve a practical purpose, so I decided to attach a small metal container at the bottom. This would allow the washboard to function as a planter or even as storage for small items.

  • Materials Needed:
    • Divided metal container (found at Hobby Lobby)
    • Short screws
    • Screwdriver
    • Drill (optional, for pre-drilling holes)

To avoid damaging the washboard’s glass, I enlisted my husband’s help with this step. Together, we carefully measured and drilled holes for the screws, securing the metal container firmly in place. This added both style and functionality to the piece, allowing it to hold a small potted plant, jute twine, or even some vintage clothespins.

6. Final Touches: Adding Rustic Accents

With the metal container attached, it was time to add the finishing touches that would complete the farmhouse-inspired look. I headed to Target’s Bullseye Playground and picked up a small potted plant, which fit perfectly in the metal container. A bit of jute, some vintage clothespins, and a sprig of greenery were the perfect additions to give the washboard a warm, inviting feel.

Conclusion: A Rustic Transformation Worth Every Minute

Turning an old, forgotten washboard into a beautiful piece of farmhouse décor was a rewarding experience. This project not only allowed me to tap into my creativity but also underscored the potential of upcycled items. The end result is a unique piece that adds warmth and charm to my home, reminding me of the beauty that can be found in even the simplest items.
