Walmart CEO Douglas McMillon recently hinted that the retailer may raise prices due to tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. Walmart sources products from countries like China, Canada, and Mexico, which face significant tariff increases. Although Trump temporarily reduced tariffs on most Chinese goods from 145% to 30%, he warned that rates could rise again if a trade deal isn’t reached. McMillon stated that despite efforts to keep prices low, the impact of tariffs on narrow retail margins makes it difficult to avoid price hikes.

In response, Trump criticized Walmart for blaming tariffs, stating that the retailer should absorb the costs given its substantial profits. He suggested that both Walmart and China should “eat the tariffs” without passing costs to consumers. Meanwhile, billionaire Mark Cuban advised shoppers to stock up on essential items at Walmart before potential price increases, warning that companies might use tariffs as an excuse to raise prices even on domestically produced goods.
