Trump issues new 4-word warning to Greenland
Tensions surrounding Greenland have intensified once again, with increasingly sharp rhetoric coming from Washington. The issue has returned to the forefront despite strong opposition among Greenland’s population to becoming part of the United States.
Although a recent poll showed that 85 percent of Greenlanders reject U.S. control, Donald Trump has continued to press the issue. On Monday, he issued a strong warning that quickly drew attention across Europe.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump accused Denmark of failing to address what he described as a growing Russian presence in Greenland. He suggested NATO has long pressured Denmark on security matters and implied the United States may take action on its own.
The remarks followed Trump’s announcement of a 10 percent tariff on goods from several European countries, including Denmark, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. He stated the tariffs would remain in effect until Greenland becomes American.
European leaders reacted swiftly, holding emergency talks and warning that the measures threaten transatlantic relations. EU officials said the bloc is prepared to respond to what they called economic coercion, with a special summit planned.
In Greenland, public opposition has grown. Around 1,000 people marched in Nuuk to protest Trump’s comments, reaffirming that Greenland’s future should be decided solely by its residents.
Denmark and its allies have urged calm, stressing that military deployments pose no threat. Critics in Europe and the United States alike warned that using threats or force against Greenland could severely damage NATO and long-standing alliances.
