Trump Moves to Reshape Immigration

The Trump administration has dismissed approximately fifty immigration judges, marking one of the largest upheavals in the U.S. immigration court system in decades.

The terminations were communicated via a brief three-line email, occurring amid a backlog exceeding three million pending cases.

Supporters of the action say it fulfills Trump’s promise to “end the judicial swamp,” arguing that some judges acted as “policy makers instead of interpreters of the law.” A Department of Homeland Security official added, “That era is over.”

Several judges spoke out about the dismissals. Former Judge Jennifer Peyton said she had “no disciplinary record” and was completely blindsided. Carla Espinoza claimed she faced discrimination after releasing a detainee flagged by Homeland Security.

Senator Dick Durbin criticized the move, calling it an “abuse of power.”

The firings have sparked concern among unions and activists, who warn the purge threatens judicial independence and the fairness of hearings. Legal action is reportedly being prepared in response.

Despite the backlash, President Trump defended the dismissals, stating, “If you break our laws and come here illegally… the game is over,” emphasizing his commitment to stricter immigration enforcement.
