Trump re-hires almost

US President Donald Trump has been ordered to rehire around 25,000 federal workers who were previously fired by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This comes after two judges ruled that the layoffs were “illegal.” Musk’s controversial leadership of DOGE involved significant spending cuts, which included reducing government departments and jeopardizing national security, such as cuts to the Energy Department’s nuclear weapons division. These actions have drawn criticism, with several cuts later being reversed after claims of accidents. One judge ruled the cuts in the USAID as “unconstitutional,” while two others ordered the rehiring of workers from various departments, including Agriculture, Health and Human Services, and the Treasury.

Despite the ruling, the Trump administration has only partially complied, rehiring employees but placing them on administrative leave, which Judge Alsup criticized as insufficient. The Department of Justice (DOJ) has appealed the court decisions, arguing against the limitations placed on DOGE’s initiatives. While Trump has previously expressed support for targeted cuts, these court orders present significant challenges for Musk’s department, especially if the appeals are denied. The situation continues to develop, with legal battles ahead regarding the legality and scope of DOGE’s actions.
