Uncontrollable Passenger Tries To Open Door Mid-Flight, Forcing Emergency Landing
A flight from Omaha to Detroit was forced to make an emergency landing after a passenger allegedly tried to open an exit door mid-flight. The incident occurred on Delta Connection Flight 3612, operated by SkyWest Airlines, on Thursday, July 17.
According to CNN, the disturbance began when a male passenger argued with a flight attendant and then attempted to open the emergency door. Audio from LiveATC.net revealed the pilot reporting the altercation to air traffic control.
The plane diverted to Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids, where local police boarded the aircraft and detained the individual. The passenger was identified as 23-year-old Mario Nikprelaj from Nebraska.
A Facebook post by Cedar Rapids Police confirmed that officers were dispatched at 6:13 p.m. and arrested Nikprelaj upon landing. He was taken to Linn County Correctional Center and faces multiple charges.
The charges include disorderly conduct, assault, possession of prescription drugs, failure to have a drug tax stamp, and first-degree harassment. Authorities noted that additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
Despite the disruption, the flight resumed its journey later that evening and departed Cedar Rapids before 8:30 p.m. local time. The plane eventually arrived in Detroit at 10:35 p.m., nearly two hours behind schedule.
SkyWest issued a statement emphasizing that it does not tolerate disruptive behavior and prioritizes the safety of passengers and crew at all times.
